Chrome Privacy Settings

Review Chrome privacy settings step by step, with official documentation, compatibility tradeoffs, and instructions for undoing changes.

Block third-party cookies

Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies

  1. Open Third-party cookies.
  2. Choose Block third-party cookies.
  3. Try an everyday sign-in; add a site exception only if necessary.

Reduces cookie-based connections between different sites.

To undo: Remove an exception to protect that site again, or restore the prior cookie setting.

Official documentation

Review the access you have handed out

Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings

  1. Review Camera, Microphone, and Location.
  2. Remove old permissions for sites you no longer use.
  3. Keep Ask before access, or block a feature you never use.

Limits standing access to your device and location.

To undo: Allow a trusted site again when you need its feature.

Official documentation

Stop unnecessary notification requests

Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Notifications

  1. Open Notifications.
  2. Choose the no-requests option if you do not need website alerts.
  3. Review existing allowed sites and block unwanted entries.

Cuts unwanted prompts and persistent website alerts.

To undo: Allow a specific site again when you want its notifications.

Official documentation

Reduce optional usage reporting

Settings → You and Google → Google services

  1. Open Google services; some versions call it Sync and Google services.
  2. Turn off Help improve Chrome’s features and performance.
  3. Turn off Make searches and browsing better if you do not want to share those metrics.

Reduces optional reports and URL-related metrics sent to Google.

To undo: Restore either switch independently.

Official documentation

Keep partial searches on your device

Settings → You and Google → Google services

  1. Find Improve search suggestions.
  2. Turn it off.
  3. Local suggestions can remain; searches are still sent when you submit them.

Reduces sending unfinished address-bar text to your search provider.

To undo: Turn the setting on again for remote autocomplete.

Official documentation

Load a page when you choose it

Settings → Performance

  1. Find Preload pages.
  2. Turn preloading off.
  3. Browse normally and check whether the speed tradeoff matters to you.

Limits speculative page loading before you select a result.

To undo: Turn preloading on again if you prefer its speed benefit.

Official documentation

Prefer secure connections

Settings → Privacy and security → Security

  1. Find Always use secure connections.
  2. Turn it on.
  3. Choose warnings for public and private sites if you also want warnings for intranet HTTP.

Adds a warning before an unencrypted connection.

To undo: Change the warning scope if a necessary local site needs different handling.

Official documentation

Review secure DNS

Settings → Privacy and security → Security

  1. Find Use secure DNS.
  2. Keep it enabled where available; review the provider.
  3. Select a custom provider only if you understand its policy and your network needs.

Encrypts DNS lookups; it does not hide all traffic or make the chosen resolver anonymous.

To undo: Restore the automatic/current-provider setting if a custom resolver causes problems.

Official documentation

Keep spell checking local

Settings → Languages

  1. Find Spell check.
  2. Choose Basic spell check rather than Enhanced, where available.
  3. Keep local spell checking if it helps you write.

Enhanced spell check sends typed text to Google; basic checking avoids that service.

To undo: Switch back to Enhanced if you accept its data-sharing tradeoff.

Official documentation

Limit extension access

Menu → Extensions → Manage extensions

  1. Open Manage extensions.
  2. Remove extensions you no longer use.
  3. For retained extensions, open Details and narrow site access where the feature permits.

Reduces which extra tools can read pages you visit.

To undo: Restore an extension’s access only for sites where you need it. Blocking access can stop its feature.
