Brave Privacy Settings

Review Brave privacy settings step by step, with official documentation, compatibility tradeoffs, and instructions for undoing changes.

Turn up tracker blocking

Settings → Shields

  1. Select Shields in Settings.
  2. Set Trackers & ads blocking to Aggressive.
  3. Open a familiar site and check its sign-in and video.

Blocks more advertising and tracking content.

To undo: If a site breaks, use its lion icon for a site-specific adjustment; keep protection elsewhere.

Official documentation

Keep cookies within their own sites

Settings → Shields

  1. Find the cookie control in Shields.
  2. Choose Block third-party cookies.
  3. Keep first-party cookies available for normal sign-ins.

Limits a common route for connecting activity between sites.

To undo: Use a narrow exception for a service you need rather than allowing every third party.

Official documentation

Keep fingerprinting protection on

Settings → Shields

  1. Open the global Shields settings.
  2. Make sure Block fingerprinting is on.
  3. Leave script blocking off unless you understand the effect.

Keeps Brave’s built-in fingerprinting defenses active.

To undo: If needed, adjust a specific site from the lion icon instead of turning protection off everywhere.

Official documentation

Take back unused permissions

Settings → Privacy and security → Site and Shields settings

  1. Open Site and Shields settings.
  2. Review Camera, Microphone, and Location.
  3. Remove old grants; leave new requests on Ask, or block features you never use.

Reduces standing access to sensitive device features.

To undo: A trusted site can ask again when you need its feature.

Official documentation

Prefer encrypted connections

Settings → Shields

  1. Find Upgrade connections to HTTPS.
  2. Choose Strict.
  3. Test a site you use that may be HTTP-only.

Makes accidental unencrypted browsing less likely.

To undo: An HTTP-only site may fail. Change the exception only if you accept that connection.

Official documentation

Reduce optional browser reporting

Settings → Privacy and security

  1. Find the optional product analytics, daily usage, and diagnostic-report controls.
  2. Turn off the reporting you do not want.
  3. Leave Safe Browsing enabled.

Reduces optional usage and crash reporting.

To undo: Return to the same switches to contribute reports again.

Official documentation

Send a search when you mean to

Settings → Search engine / Privacy and security

  1. Find Show search suggestions or Autocomplete searches and URLs.
  2. Turn the remote suggestion control off.
  3. Type a search and press Enter when ready to send it.

Reduces sending partial address-bar text to your search provider.

To undo: Switch suggestions back on if you prefer the convenience.

Official documentation

Review WebRTC address handling

Settings → Privacy and security

  1. Find WebRTC IP Handling Policy.
  2. If limiting local-address exposure is important to you, consider Default Public Interface Only.
  3. Test a browser call before keeping the change.

Can limit which local network addresses WebRTC exposes. This is not a VPN leak guarantee.

To undo: Return to Default if calls fail. Disable Non-Proxied UDP is a stricter option that can affect calls.
